Sustain — Concerts, talks and panel discussions to make change resonate in the sharing of live music
Background
Stomp your feet on the dance floor and bang your fist on the table. That’s the premise of the Sustain festival, a testing ground for contemporary music and new ideas conceived by L’Aéronef, the legendary concert venue in the Lille region. Concerts and panel discussions punctuate a weekend across the city, in collaboration with a host of partners, exploring the future of live music from an ecological perspective.
In line with this approach, the visual identity of this edition of Sustain set itself a major challenge: to design all communication materials so that only a single print run would be required, with the aim of minimising the environmental impact of their production.
Where multiple print runs would otherwise have been necessary, a single print run produced 600 posters measuring 70 × 100 cm, 700 posters measuring 40 × 60 cm, 3,000 programme leaflets, and 200 notebook covers, while optimising resources: a limited number of sheets, rational use of aluminium plates, and reduction of paper waste by deceasing machine set-up.
The visuals interlock with one another, providing both an insight into the technical approach described above and a suggestion of the festival’s conceptual vision: a message that unfolds, amplifies, and resonates. The printing matrix (the 70 × 100 cm poster, which is the largest format) then incorporates all the other formats.
Posters
All the posters are included in the largest format.

Programme leaflets: trimming
The programme leaflets are cut from the master poster, producing a set of four distinct versions.
Programme leaflets: folding
Through an interplayplay of offset folds, the festival title appears in a fixed position once the programme poster is folded, despite the variety of visuals.
Notebook covers
A layer of ink (the black one, used for practical information) is removed at the end of the printing process to produce the 32 different visuals for the notebook covers handed out during the panel discussions.
A digital extension of the graphic system
Some examples of digital elements, either static or animated.
